How to Tuck a Couch Cover
A loose linen cover lets you style your sofa your way. Tuck it in deeply for a clean, tailored, minimalist look, or leave it softly draped for a relaxed, bohemian feel with natural creases. Either way, you get the beauty of natural linen: breathable, pleasant to the touch, and softer with every wash. Whenever you feel like a change, or just want a new color, you swap the cover, and the whole room feels different.
How to Tuck Your Sofa Cover
Our couch covers are loose-fit: one rectangular piece of linen, draped over the sofa and tucked in rather than sewn to its shape. That is why one cover suits so many different sofas. Tucking it in for the first time takes about 10–15 minutes. After that, it is quick.
Before You Start
- Remove throw pillows and blankets.
- Find the front. The cover is sewn from three panels joined by two seams. The narrowest panel is the front: it hangs from the front edge of the seat down to the floor.
- Place the seams. The first seam runs along the front edge of the seat cushions. The second seam sits behind the back cushions or along the top edge of the back, where it can’t be seen from the front.
- Center the cover so it hangs evenly on both sides, with roughly the same amount of fabric over each arm.
What You Will Need
A sofa ready for a new look, or one you would like to protect from pets and everyday life, and about 10–15 minutes. A flat wooden spoon or ruler can help push the fabric deep into tight gaps.

Step-by-Step Guide
Here is how we tuck our covers. Follow the photos in order: each one shows a single step.
1. Before. Your sofa without a cover.
2. Start with the seat. Line the first seam up with the front edge of the seat cushions. Then push the fabric down into the gap behind and beside the seat cushions, so the cover follows the shape of the seat.
3. Tuck along the first arm. Starting on one side, push the fabric into the gap between the arm and the seat cushion, working from front to back.
4. Tuck the second arm and the sides of the back. Repeat on the other arm, then continue tucking along the sides of the back cushions. This is where the sofa’s shape starts to show through.
5. Arrange the fabric at the arms. Smooth the fabric over the front and back of each arm. You can pleat the extra fabric and tuck it under the arm for a neater look, or let it fall loosely to the floor.
6. Tuck between the back and seat cushions. Push the fabric into the crease where the back cushions meet the seat, and into the gap between the back cushions. Smooth the seat as you go.
7. Smooth the top of the back. Working from the top of the back cushions, pull the fabric gently to remove wrinkles, then tuck it behind the cushions.
8. Finish the back of the sofa. Straighten the fabric at the back of the sofa. If the back is on display, tuck it neatly behind the back cushions. If the sofa stands against a wall, you can leave it loose.
9. Done. A close-up of the tucked cover.
10. Your sofa in its new linen cover.
Tailored or Relaxed?
For a crisp, tailored look, tuck every step deeply. For a softer, more relaxed look, skip the tucking under the seat cushions and let the fabric fall loosely at the arms.
Good to Know
- The cover may loosen with everyday use. Just re-tuck the seat and back gaps now and then.
- The cover is easy to take off and machine wash, which makes it a practical choice for homes with pets. See our Linen Care Guide for washing tips.
- Have a dog? Choose our Rustic Heavy linen (450 g/m²). It is our thickest, most durable fabric and gives your sofa the most protection.
- For a crisp, tailored look, iron the cover before putting it on, or smooth it in place with a handheld steamer.
- Prefer a different look? You can drape the cover any way you like. The steps above are simply how we do it.
- Have a corner sofa? See How to Tuck a Sectional Cover.
