Questions About Linen Bedspreads
What is the difference between a bedspread, a coverlet and a quilt?
Our bedspreads are what many people call a coverlet: a single layer of linen with no filling. A quilt has padding stitched between two layers of fabric. Without filling, a linen bedspread drapes closer to the bed, breathes, and folds away small.
What size bedspread do I need for a queen or king bed?
For a queen bed, choose 92 × 99″ (234 × 250 cm). For a king, choose 103 × 99″ (260 × 250 cm), or 130 × 106″ (330 × 270 cm) for a longer drop. For a twin, 53 × 87″ (136 × 220 cm), and for a full, 78 × 99″ (197 × 250 cm). If you want the bedspread to reach the floor, choose 128 × 128″ (325 × 325 cm) for a queen or king, or 142 × 142″ (360 × 360 cm) for a king or California king. The Size Guide on each bedspread shows UK, EU and Australian beds as well.
How far should a bedspread hang over the sides?
That depends on the look you want. A drop of 12–16″ (30–40 cm) covers the sides of the mattress. A drop of 22–26″ (55–65 cm) usually reaches the floor on a bed of standard height. A length of 99″ (250 cm) covers an 80″ (200 cm) mattress with enough left to tuck in or fold over the pillows.
What is the difference between 260 g/m² and 450 g/m² linen?
Heavyweight 260 g/m² is used for most of our colours. It drapes softly and suits the bed all year round. Extra heavyweight 450 g/m², in our Rustic Heavy bedspread, is noticeably thicker, with a pronounced, denim-like texture and more weight on the bed. Not sure which you prefer? Order fabric samples of both.
Can I use a linen bedspread on its own in summer?
Yes. Linen breathes and regulates temperature, so on warm nights the bedspread can be your only cover, and in winter it goes over your duvet as a finishing layer. The smallest size, 53 × 71″ (136 × 180 cm), also works as a throw at the foot of the bed or on a sofa.
Will a linen bedspread shrink?
Our linen is softened before the bedspread is cut and sewn, and washing is one of the softening steps, so most of the shrinkage happens before it reaches you. Slight shrinkage after the first home wash is still normal for linen. Wash at up to 40°C / 104°F and avoid high dryer heat, and your bedspread will stay close to its original size.
How do I wash a linen bedspread?
Machine wash on a gentle cycle at up to 40°C / 104°F with a mild detergent, and do not overload the drum. Tumble dry on low and take it out while still slightly damp, or smooth out the creases and hang it to dry. Linen keeps a light natural crease; iron it while damp if you prefer a crisp finish.
