How to Choose Linen Curtains: Fabric Weight, Color, and Hanging Style Guide

There is something about linen curtains that no other fabric quite replicates. The way natural light filters through them in the morning — soft, warm, unhurried — sets the tone for the entire room. We noticed this when we first time hung linen curtains in our own home, and it was one of those small moments that quietly changes everything. Since then, we have made it our mission to help others find that same feeling. Here is this guide to help you.

Why Choose Linen Curtains?

Linen is one of the oldest and most versatile natural fabrics in the world — and for good reason. Speaking about the curtains specifically, it offers a combination of qualities that synthetic fabrics simply cannot match:
Natural light filtering. Linen allows soft, diffused light to pass through, creating a warm and calming atmosphere without fully blocking the view. This is something that makes linen curtains particularly beautiful in living rooms and bedrooms.Breathability. Unlike synthetic curtains that can trap heat, linen is a naturally breathable fabric. It helps to regulate temperature — keeping rooms cooler in summer and retaining warmth in winter.
Timeless beauty. Linen has a naturally textured, lived-in quality that looks beautiful whether perfectly pressed or gently wrinkled. It suits both modern and classic interiors vey well.
Durability. Linen is approximately 30% stronger than cotton and becomes softer and more beautiful with every wash. A quality pair of linen curtains is not just a purchase — it is a long-term investment in your home.
Sustainability. Flax — the plant linen is made from — requires no pesticides, uses very little water, and is fully biodegradable. Choosing linen is a small, but meaningful step toward a more sustainable home.

Choosing the Right Fabric Weight

One of the most important — and often overlooked — decisions when choosing linen curtains is the fabric weight. Different weights create very different effects in a room.
Lightweight linen (up to 180 g/m²) Light, airy, and semi-transparent. These curtains allow plenty of natural light to filter through and move beautifully in a gentle breeze. They are ideal for bedrooms, reading books, and any space where you want a soft, romantic atmosphere. Our Tie Top Optical White Linen Curtain with Ruffles is a perfect example — delicate, feminine, and full of quiet charm.Medium-weight linen (180–250 g/m²) The most versatile option. These curtains offer a good balance between light filtering and privacy, and they drape beautifully. Suitable for living rooms, dining rooms, and any space where you want both style and function. Our Amber Yellow Linen Curtain and Moss Green Linen Curtain fall into this category — rich in color, elegant in drape.
Heavyweight and lined linen (250 g/m² and above). For maximum privacy, insulation, and a more formal, structured look. Our Lined Amber Yellow Linen Curtain and Lined Rustic Linen Curtain feature an additional lining layer that blocks more light and provides better thermal insulation — ideal for bedrooms where complete darkness is desired, or for larger living spaces with high ceilings.
Blackout linen curtains If you need full light blocking — for a nursery, a bedroom, or a home cinema — our blackout linen curtains combine the natural beauty of linen with a blackout lining. All the warmth of linen, none of the early morning light.

Choosing the Right Color

Color is perhaps the most personal decision when choosing linen curtains. Here is how to think about it:
Optical White and Antique White. The most versatile and universally loved choices. White and off-white linen curtains work in virtually any interior — from Scandinavian minimalism to classic Provençal. They maximize natural light and make spaces feel larger and more airy. Our Antique White Linen Curtain has a slightly warmer, creamier tone that suits traditional and rustic interiors particularly well.
Rustic (Natural, Undyed) The natural, undyed shade of linen is earthy, warm, and deeply authentic. It suits bohemian, wabi-sabi, Tuscan, and rustic country interiors beautifully — any space that celebrates natural materials and organic textures. Our Rustic Linen Curtain is one of our most popular choices for exactly this reason.
Amber Yellow. A warm, distinctive color that brings energy and character to a room. Amber yellow linen curtains work wonderfully in interiors with natural wood accents, stone, and warm earthy tones. Bold enough to be a statement, natural enough to feel at home.
Moss Green A soft, muted green that brings the feeling of nature indoors. Moss green curtains suit rustic, Tuscan, and bohemian interiors particularly well — especially spaces with natural wood, exposed brick, or stone walls.
A note on color consistency: linen is a natural fiber, and slight color variations between production batches are part of its natural character. If you are ordering curtains to match other linen pieces at your home, we recommend ordering everything together in a single purchase. If you are unsure about a color, our fabric samples are always a good first step.

Hanging Styles: Which One is Right for You?

We strive to make our curtains both visually appealing and versatile — suitable for a variety of curtain rods and rails, and practical to hang and adjust.
Standard linen curtains with a universal header tape. Thanks to the universal header tape, these curtains are compatible with the most popular curtain rod types and are our most popular choice. They create clean, elegant folds and suit a wide range of interior styles — from minimalist to classic.
Tie Top curtains. Our tie top curtains feature fabric ties at the top that loop directly over the curtain rod. This method is unique in that it allows you to easily adjust the height of the curtains. It also creates a relaxed, bohemian look with casual, uneven folds — perfect for informal, natural interiors. Our Moss Green Tie Top Linen Curtain is a perfect example of this effortless elegance.
Curtains with ruffles. For a more romantic, feminine look, our ruffled curtains add a decorative detail at the top or bottom of the panel. They work particularly well in Provençal, classic, and soft bohemian interiors. Our Optical White Ruffled Linen Curtain is one of our favourite designs.
Lined and blackout curtains. These curtains fit standard curtain rails or rods and are heavier than regular linen curtains. They are ideal for rooms where light blocking or heat insulation is a priority — the perfect balance between the natural beauty of linen and maximum light control.

Caring for Your Linen Curtains

Linen curtains are easier to care for than most people expect. Machine wash at 40°C / 104°F on a gentle cycle, remove while slightly damp, and hang directly back on the rod to dry — the weight of the curtain will naturally smooth out most creases. For a crisper finish, iron while still slightly damp.
